Mobile Proxy vs Residential Proxy: Which to Buy

Mobile proxy vs residential proxy: how they differ in trust, speed and price ($3.99 vs $0.99/GB), which jobs need mobile, and how to test both cheaply.

Mobile proxy vs residential proxy comes down to one trade: mobile IPs are harder for sites to block, and residential IPs cost far less. Buy residential for most scraping, monitoring and research. Pay for mobile only when the target is built around phone traffic, when residential IPs keep getting flagged there, or when a block costs you more than the price difference. On BuyProxy that difference is $0.99/GB for Core Residential against $3.99/GB for mobile, so the choice has a real price attached.

Mobile vs Residential Proxies at a Glance

Both types use IP addresses that belong to consumer internet providers, which is why both pass checks that stop datacenter proxies. They differ in where the address comes from and what that does to trust, speed and price.

Where Each Kind of IP Comes From

A residential proxy routes your request through an address an internet provider assigned to a home connection. A mobile proxy routes it through an address a mobile carrier assigned to a phone connection. To the target site, the first looks like someone on home Wi-Fi and the second looks like someone on their phone's data plan.

That source matters because sites score traffic by where it comes from. Hosting ranges get the least trust, home connections get more, and carrier ranges usually get the most. Our explainer on what mobile proxies are covers the carrier side in more depth.

Why Sites Trust Mobile IPs More

Carriers have far more subscribers than public IPv4 addresses, so they place many phones behind a small set of shared addresses. The technique is carrier-grade NAT, and the IETF's RFC 6888 defines it as a way to share the same IPv4 address among several subscribers. If a site blocks one of those addresses, it risks blocking a large number of real customers on that network at the same time.

Most sites avoid that risk, so they block mobile addresses slowly and with more caution. Home connections are shared by far fewer people, so a site can block a residential IP with much less collateral damage, and that difference in caution is what the mobile price buys.

The trust has limits. A carrier IP slows down how fast an address gets blocked, but it will not save an automated account that behaves like a bot, and platforms still run their other checks.

What That Extra Trust Costs

On BuyProxy, mobile costs about four times as much per GB as Core Residential. Here is what typical monthly volumes cost at pay-as-you-go rates:

Monthly trafficCore Residential ($0.99/GB)Premium Residential ($2.99/GB)Mobile ($3.99/GB)
10 GB$9.90$29.90$39.90
50 GB$49.50$149.50$199.50
100 GB$99.00 plus 10 GB bonus$299.00 plus 10 GB bonus$399.00 plus 10 GB bonus

Top-ups of 100 GB or more add 10% free on any type, and credits never expire. Monthly plans lower the residential rate further, to about $0.50/GB on the largest plan, while mobile keeps its own balance funded by top-ups.

The useful comparison is cost per successful request. A blocked request still uses bandwidth, so divide the price per GB by the success rate on your target. With these prices, residential stays cheaper per good result until its success rate drops below about a quarter of mobile's. If residential gets 80% through on a target and mobile gets 95%, residential is still far cheaper. If residential falls to 15% and mobile holds at 90%, mobile wins.

Speed and Stability

Residential connections are usually faster and steadier than mobile ones. Carrier networks add latency, and their speed changes with signal and congestion, so expect more variation from one request to the next on mobile.

This matters most for time-sensitive work and large pages. For a fair comparison, run the same requests through both types on your real target and record time to first byte. Our proxy speed testing guide has a script for it, and the free latency test gives a quick first reading.

Which One Fits Your Job

Choose by what the target expects. This list covers the common cases:

  • Web scraping of ordinary sites: residential. It passes datacenter blocks at a fraction of the mobile price.
  • Price monitoring and market research: residential, with Premium when you need city-level prices.
  • Checking your own site's localized pages: residential.
  • Mobile app QA and mobile web testing: mobile, because the service expects carrier traffic.
  • Mobile ad verification: mobile, so the ad request comes from a real carrier network.
  • A target that keeps flagging residential IPs: test mobile on that target only, and keep everything else on residential.
  • Bandwidth-heavy jobs like video: residential or datacenter. Mobile per-GB costs add up fast.

Three questions settle most cases. Is the target mobile-first or app-based? Has a cheaper type already been blocked there? Would a block cost more than the price difference? Two yes answers make mobile worth a test.

Test Both Before You Decide

You can settle the question for your own target in an afternoon with a small paid test:

  1. Top up the minimum of each type: 6 GB of Core Residential and 2 GB of mobile on BuyProxy.
  2. Pick 200 to 300 real requests from your workload and send the same set through each type, from the same country.
  3. Count successes by checking for the content you need, since block pages often return a 200 status.
  4. Note the average response time and the data used.
  5. Divide price per GB by success rate for each type, and use the cheaper one per good result.

Keep both balances afterwards. Many teams route most traffic through residential and send only the hardest targets through mobile, since each type keeps its own balance on the same account.

Where Dedicated Mobile IPs Fit

Per-GB mobile gives you carrier IPs by country from a shared pool. If you need a specific carrier, or one mobile IP to stay yours for a period, rent dedicated mobile proxies instead. You choose the carrier, whether the IP is dedicated or shared, and how it rotates. A US IP starts at $72 for a month.

Rental makes sense when a workflow needs the same carrier IP every day. For variable volume, per-GB mobile is usually cheaper. Our comparison of dedicated vs shared mobile proxies has the break-even math.

Stay Within Platform Rules

Many platforms ban automation, fake accounts and spam in their terms. Using carrier IPs to get around those rules can get accounts banned, and it breaks our acceptable use policy. Use mobile and residential proxies for testing, verification, research and data collection that the target allows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are mobile proxies better than residential proxies?
Mobile proxies get more trust from sites, and residential proxies cost far less and are usually faster. Mobile is better only on mobile-first targets or where residential IPs keep getting blocked. For most scraping and monitoring, residential gives a lower cost per successful request.

Q: Why are mobile proxies so expensive?
Carrier IPs are scarce and costly to supply, and they carry the most trust with websites. On BuyProxy mobile costs $3.99/GB, about four times Core Residential at $0.99/GB.

Q: Are mobile proxies faster than residential proxies?
Usually not. Carrier connections add latency and vary with signal and network load. Residential connections tend to be steadier, and datacenter or ISP proxies are faster still.

Q: Can I target a specific mobile carrier?
Per-GB mobile proxies target by country. To pick a carrier, rent dedicated mobile IPs, where the carriers on sale in each country are listed when you order.

Q: Can I use residential and mobile proxies on the same account?
Yes. Each type has its own balance under one account, so you can send most traffic through residential and keep mobile for the targets that need it.

Summary

Residential proxies are the right default: they pass datacenter blocks, cost $0.99/GB on Core, and are usually faster. Mobile proxies cost about four times more and earn it on mobile-first platforms, mobile ad checks and targets that keep blocking residential IPs. Test both on your real target and pick by cost per successful request.
