A backconnect proxy is one gateway address that sends each of your requests out through a large pool of other IPs. You connect to a single host and port, and the gateway picks the exit IP: a new one on every request, or the same one for a while when you ask for a sticky session. BuyProxy's residential proxies work this way, so the examples below use the real line formats our gateways accept.
Backconnect Proxy vs a Proxy List
A proxy list hands you many addresses to manage yourself, while a backconnect proxy gives you one address and manages the pool behind it. That changes who rotates the IPs, who replaces dead ones and how you pay.
| Backconnect gateway | Proxy list | |
|---|---|---|
| What you connect to | One host and port | One host and port per IP |
| Who picks the exit IP | The gateway, per request or per session | Your code |
| Dead or blocked IPs | The gateway moves you to another exit | You remove them and find replacements |
| IPs you can reach | The whole pool behind the gateway | Only the addresses on your list |
| Usual billing | Per GB of traffic | Per IP per month |
| Best for | Scraping and monitoring across many pages | Logins and allowlists that need one fixed address |
The name describes the path: your request goes forward to the gateway, which then connects back out through an exit node. You will also see the same setup sold as a rotating proxy or a gateway proxy.
How a Request Travels Through the Gateway
Every request makes the same four hops, and you only configure the first one.
- Your client connects to the gateway, for example
gw.buyproxy.org:6969, and sends your username and password. - The gateway checks the credentials and reads the settings written into the username, such as the country and the session ID.
- It forwards the request through an exit IP that matches those settings.
- The response returns through the same exit IP and the gateway to you.
The target only sees the exit IP, so it cannot tie thousands of requests to your machine. It can still see your headers, cookies and browser fingerprint. Our guide to web scraping anonymity covers what a proxy hides and what it leaves visible.
Reading a Backconnect Proxy Line
A gateway line has four parts, host:port:username:password, and the targeting lives in the username. These are the two formats BuyProxy generates, with the usernames shortened:
# Core Residential, sticky session, United States
gw.buyproxy.org:6969:USER-country-us-session-655a1fee:PASSWORD
# Premium Residential, sticky for 15 minutes, United States
premium.buyproxy.org:10000:USER-type-residential-country-us-session-abc123-lifetime-15:PASSWORD
| Username part | What it tells the gateway |
|---|---|
country-us | Use exit IPs in the United States |
session-655a1fee | Keep the same exit IP while you keep using this line |
lifetime-15 | Premium only: hold the session for 15 minutes (anything from 3 minutes to 24 hours) |
type-residential | Part of the Premium format, written in when the line is generated |
You do not build these strings by hand. The dashboard and the API generate them with your settings already in the username, and the sticky sessions docs show the API call. Copy each line exactly, because the gateway reads every part of the username.
Rotating and Sticky Sessions Through One Gateway
The same gateway can rotate or hold an IP, and the session ID in the username decides which. A line without one can leave from a different IP on each request, which suits independent page loads. A line with one keeps sending you out through the same exit.
How long that lasts depends on the product. On Premium Residential you set it, from 3 minutes to 24 hours. Core Residential holds the IP for as long as you keep using the line, with no length you choose. When a session ends, generate a new line instead of assuming the old one still points at the same address. Our explainer on how rotating residential proxies work has more on picking between the two.
Test a Backconnect Proxy With curl
Two requests in a row show whether a line rotates or holds. curl's -x option sends a request through a proxy (the curl manual lists every proxy option), and api.ipify.org replies with the IP it saw:
curl -x "http://USER-country-us:PASSWORD@gw.buyproxy.org:6969" https://api.ipify.org
curl -x "http://USER-country-us:PASSWORD@gw.buyproxy.org:6969" https://api.ipify.org
On a rotating line the two answers will usually differ. Run the same pair with a sticky line and they should match. Paste the address into our IP lookup tool to confirm its country and network. If your software only speaks SOCKS5, read which proxy protocol to use before you switch.
Common Backconnect Errors and What They Mean
Most gateway problems show up as one of a few responses, and each points at a different part of the setup.
- 407 Proxy Authentication Required. The gateway did not accept the username or password. As MDN's 407 reference explains, the proxy is asking for credentials here, the target site never saw the request. Check that you copied the whole username, targeting included.
- A sticky IP changed mid-task. The session ended or that exit went offline. Write retries that expect a new IP, and generate a fresh line for each new session.
- 403 or a CAPTCHA. The proxy worked and the site turned the request away. Slow down, check your headers, or move that target to a higher tier.
- 502 or 504. The gateway could not get a timely answer through the exit. Retry with a backoff.

Pros and Cons of Backconnect Proxies
A backconnect proxy is the simpler setup for most data collection, and the wrong one when a site needs you on a fixed address.
On the plus side, you configure one endpoint in any tool, the pool and its dead IPs are handled for you, and you pay for traffic instead of addresses (Core Residential is $0.99/GB). Changing country or session is a matter of generating a new line.
The downsides come from not owning the IP. You do not choose the exact address, sticky sessions end, and per-GB billing gets expensive for very large transfers. For a login that has to keep one address for weeks, rent a static IP instead; our guide to static ISP proxies covers when that pays off.
What to Check Before You Buy a Backconnect Proxy Service
Five questions decide what a backconnect service will really cost you and whether it fits the job:
- Can you set the sticky length, and what is the maximum? On BuyProxy Premium it is 3 minutes to 24 hours.
- Which targeting do you get? Core Residential targets by country, and Premium adds state, city and ASN.
- What is the price per GB, the minimum purchase, and does unused bandwidth expire? BuyProxy credits never expire, and the smallest Core top-up is 6 GB for $5.94.
- Does it support HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5 for the tools you run?
- Is per-GB billing right for your volume? Our per-IP vs per-GB pricing comparison shows where each model wins.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between a backconnect proxy and a rotating proxy?
Usually there is none. Both describe a gateway that sends your requests through a pool and changes the exit IP for you. Backconnect names the setup and rotating names what it does to the IP, and most gateways can hold a sticky session too.
Q: Is a backconnect proxy the same as a residential proxy?
No. Backconnect describes how you connect, and residential describes where the exit IPs come from. A gateway can sit in front of residential, mobile, ISP or datacenter addresses, and BuyProxy's per-GB residential products are reached through one.
Q: How long does a sticky backconnect session last?
It depends on the provider and product. On BuyProxy Premium Residential you choose from 3 minutes to 24 hours. Core Residential keeps the IP while you keep using the line, without a length you set.
Q: Can I buy a backconnect proxy for a small test?
Yes. On BuyProxy the smallest Core Residential top-up is 6 GB for $5.94 and the credits never expire. You can also ask our support team in chat, on Discord or by email for 100MB of free test bandwidth.
Q: Do backconnect proxies work over SOCKS5?
Many do, including BuyProxy's, which support HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5. Use whichever protocol your scraper or browser tool expects.
Summary
A backconnect proxy gives you one gateway in front of a large IP pool, so you stop managing lists and pay for the traffic you send. The username carries the country and session settings, a session ID keeps one IP, and Premium Residential lets you set that session from 3 minutes to 24 hours. Test any line with two curl requests before you point a scraper at it.
